Welcome to Physics - Physics Blogging

You will be using this medium for a weekly assignment that will help you to be able to observe, document and report on physics that you see outside of the classroom. We will set you up in class and here are the guidelines for your first post : DUE SUNDAY 8/14 by 11:59pm

  • Blogpost #1 - Introduction and who you are
    • Letter & Picture of Introduction - The letter of introduction will be a minimum of 100 words, including:
      • information about yourself
      • your progress in science courses thus far,
      • what math course you are in
      • what you hope to obtain as a result of completing this course.
      • include a picture that represents who you are as an individual.
      • Please explain the story behind your picture
You will be assessed on the thoroughness and how complete your answers are. Please be detailed in your explanations and descriptions. Contact me at chblake@ksbe.edu with any questions.

Ho'oulu ia Kamehameha

Hope that you are having a great spring break. Reminder that you should be posting your "bug list" to your blog. My suggestion that you should be updating it as you continue though your identifying your problem. Please just look at your problems, not try to fit your problems into an already identified solution.

Your group will also need to post one more time over the two week period. Have a great spring break.

Featured Blogs

Here are another set of unique postings from the past two days:

Austin, Micah and Leilani - Period 4
Makana and Ian - Period 4
Kiha and Tylar - Period 6 - Dangerous for the videographer
Sam, Brenna and Kristen - Period 6

Keep up the great work and see you tomorrow in class with Launch day 3 with a 3 second minimum in the air with an attached parachute.

Posting reminders

Everyoneʻs posts are looking good. I do like the effort and like the adding of the multimedia, launch videos and other images. It is adding to the quality of the posting. I do also like the analysis and discussion of the launches and your ideas for adapting your designs to improve them.

A friendly reminder that you are supposed to be referencing and properly citing your images that you are getting from the internet. Without these citations these posts will be docked points based upon the rubric.

Keep up the good work. Reminder that Thursdayʻs launch will require you to launch a minimum of 3 seconds in the air and a parachute must be attached. Be sure to start data collection on the time in the air and to include in in your reporting on your blog. An idea may be a picture of your rocket design, and the time in the air. Then the adjustments with another picture and the time in the air. Try to use this to relay and convey your findings and the scientific approach and revision of your experience.

Rocket Videos of the day!

Great job by all in your posting of your first launches. Many did some great work. Here are a few that made it to the big time. Congrats.

Darcy and Matt - Period 4
Kailly and Christina - Period 4
Kiana, Nicole and Kaitlin - Period 4

I do especially like the comments and discussion that is taking place in our learning community. I will also give some insight on design tomorrow and also a new way to look at many blogs (Google Reader) and a new possible tool in order to see your grades and also collaborate (Edmodo). Have a great evening and keep up the great work.

Launching Day #1 and Posting to the blogs

As we continue to add our documentation of our progress in our water bottle rocket lab, please be sure to continue to follow the 100 word minimum posting. This is true even if you are posting some video from todayʻs launches. See the Wiki for more information on the rubric and expectations for the blog posts.

Also be sure to visit other group blogs in order to see their posts, videos and experiences during this project and to comment and to start discussions with the groups. Hopefully we will be able to start and nurture this learning community into a good network of information and ideas.

Great job today. Only one minor injury and a few very wet students (maarrrrrrrr!) Please continue on with your designing and safety precautions. I will be assessing the launchers and attempt to have the ones that work best ready for our launches on Day #2

Calendar of Events for Water Bottle Rocket Project

Here is a posting of a calendar of the upcoming events and due dates for the water bottle rocket project. Please use it to help you map out your plans for class.

Labels (a.k.a. tags)...a way to categorize your information

With a great deal of information coming in on water bottle rockets and you are starting to put more posts onto your blogs, I would like to suggest a way to keep some of these ideas organized. You can "Label" or "Tag" your information of your post so it can be categorized and grouped into a searchable item. It's like "tagging" your friends into your pictures that you want them to see on Facebook. (By the way, be sure to click on the "like" button on this blog in order to receive updates via facebook. I will not see you, but you will receive posts to your wall when I update the feed)

You will label your posts by placing short words or phrases that describe your post in the area the the bottom of your posting window. Be sure to separate each phrase (or word) with a comma. Then you can search out these terms and see which posts come up. Blogger will keep a running total of these labels and over time you can have a pretty good way of searching out information on your blog.

Keep up the great work and see you all in class on Monday.

Troubleshooting the blogs and posting

A couple of things came up that I would like to make you all aware of:
  • Be sure to change your time zone to Hawaii time to be sure that your postings will be time stamped to the correct time. (mahalo Kipa)
    • You can click on the settings tab in your dashboard
    • select format
    • scroll down to change the time zone to Hawaii time (-10:00)
    • Save
  • Many of you are personalizing your blogs with gadgets. That is fine, just be sure that it does not distract from the overall purpose of the blog. The last thing that many want to see are these things. Try to only add things that will give more information about the topic. Please donʻt turn it into your myspace page as your parents and others may be visiting it in the near future.
  • I have posted a blogpost and comment rubric for you to have a better idea of how you will be assessed. It will be posted on Blackboard at the H2O Rockets section. Your assignment #1 can also be downloaded from there as well.
Be sure to bring two 2-Liter water bottles to class for launch day #1 on Monday.

Water Bottle Rocket Online Resources

After creating your blog, your assignment for this weekend (2/26-2/27) is to search out the internet and to find a online resource that has relevant content for the water bottle rocket project. It can be a website, movie or other type of content. It is up to you what to choose as a group, but please be ready to justify your choice in your comments section. Please do not use the first link you find on Google.

Online Resource Assignment - Due Sunday 2/27 by 11:59pm
Create a post in your group blog that will feature your resource and have a brief synopsis of the content. Please place the link in the post as well as other important information.
  • 100 word minimum
  • you may use pictures and other content in your post
Post the link and condensed short summary as a comment to this post. Use link at the bottom.

Post the link to the Kamehameha Physics Wiki Online Resources Page. Be sure to log in and follow the format on the page.

This assignment is also posted on Blackboard (H2O Rocket tab) and in the Kamehameha Physics Wiki Water Bottle Rocket Page. Please be sure to contact your peers or Mr. Blake if you have questions.

Water Bottle Rockets

We are embarking upon an adventure to create a water bottle rocket that will stay in the air for a minimum of 10 seconds. Through this activity, you will design, develop and engineer a water bottle rocket that will utilize many of the physics properties that we have learned about and a few others that you will need to learn on your own.

Here are some of the physics topics you will need to know and review:
  • Momentum
  • Rotational Inertia
  • Newton's Laws
  • Fluid Dynamics (for fins and stability)
  • Parachutes
There are also many tools and websites that will help you on this project, here are a few and be sure to "comment" on the future posts in order to collect our database of useful websites for this project. You can also navigate to the Water Bottle Rocket Wiki page for more information. Have fun!
